Memorial to Lesley Pring

Lesley Pring, former Chairman, Secretary and President of the GCCF

The GCCF wishes to provide a suitable memorial to a much loved servant of the UK Cat Fancy.

Many tributes have been paid to Lesley’s political skill and diplomacy in leading the Cat Fancy, but perhaps less well known in the GCCF is her contribution in the West Country to Local Government, Further Education, Village Halls, Exmoor Trust, Somerset Historic Gardens Trust and the magical garden and arboretum she built at Slade House.

After consultation with her husband, Brian, we are hoping to provide a bench seat at R.H.S. Rosemoor in North Devon.  Brian says that was her favourite local garden and she often complained that there were not enough seats at Rosemoor and some of us can visualise Lesley making this shortcoming very clear to the curator.

Below is a poem written by the late Vita Sackville-West of Sissinghurst Castle and read at Lesley’s memorial service at Nettlecombe by her sister.

When skies are gentle, breezes bland,
When loam that’s warm within the hand
Falls friable between the tines,
Sow hollyhocks and columbines,
The tufted pansy, and the tall
Snapdragon in the broken wall,
Not for this summer, but for the next,
Since foresight is the gardener’s text,
And though her eyes may never know
How lavishly her flowers blow,
Others will stand and musing say
‘These are the flowers she sowed that May’.

Should any individual or Club wish to make a donation then please forward a cheque to the GCCF Office with a note enclosed stating that it is for Lesley's memorial fund. More information on Rosemoor can be found by clicking on the image below.
